Church Urban Fund
Following the 1985 Church of England report Faith in the City which highlighted the problems of enduring poverty, the Church Urban Fund (CUF) was established to support local communities to provide local projects to address some of these problems. Some areas of the Bradford Diocese have some of the most deprived communities in England, struggling with high unemployment, overcrowding and sub-standard housing. But CUF is helping us help them.
Since 1987 CUF has given more than 100 grants to project in the Diocesan area, totalling over £1.5 million to many different projects and organisations which are making a real and lasting difference. Some of these projects are:
- The Caleb Project in Bowling, offering a drugs and alcohol recovery programme
- The Lighthouse Group in Great Horton, working with disaffected and excluded young people
- Kidz Klub, providing activities for children
- Asian Virsa, bringing culturally mixed communities together
- Music Makers in Holme Wood, offering musical activities for children
Twenty years on, the Church Urban Fund is being re-launched, and there is a new report called Faithful Cities from the Commission on Urban Life and Faith.
